http://www.rgbstock.com/user/ finding a member hint

1. crisderaud30 January 2010, 2:15 GMT +01:00

Photo site search engines often have difficulty searching for members names because the search engines are programmed to search the keywords of the images.

There is an old trick that works for most sites and works just as well here when looking for a name of a member you have, but they are not in the list of photographers.

Good Method #1 - At the top of the page click on Gallery and you will be taken to your page as in my example here: http://www.rgbstock.com/gallery/crisderaud. Your name will appear at the end of the url. Double click on your name, which will highlight just your name, and type in the name you are looking for. Hit enter or return.

Better Method #2 - Whatever page you are on the site erase the back of the url so you only have http://www.rgbstock.com/

Then type user/ so you get http://www.rgbstock.com/user/

After that, just type in the member's name, click enter or return, and it will take you to their profile page with their gallery listing below.

This method gets you there when the site search won't.

I have no objection to adding the user name in the keywords.

3. lennie31 January 2010, 17:20 GMT +01:00

Some people have done this by themselfs. I guess it could be possible to add it to the search-query directly. Maybe even the image-ID's as wel. I'm looking into this.

I added my user name to only one picture from my gallery. It's enough to find users!

5. Zela6 February 2010, 23:03 GMT +01:00

That's the modest approach ;-)

@4 I hadn't done that yet and I added my name as a keyword to one photo and I got it instantly as a search result.

With one photo found, people can get to the rest of your images and information.

I hope people realize that:

PR = Profile

GA = Gallery

These are important links from a thumbnail to the member and their gallery.

I have generally added my name to keywords as sometimes people are looking for me and my gallery, and it makes it easier. Not all my images have my name, but many do. I have looked for other people on other sites by typing in thier names, as well. That's why I started doing it on other sites.

@ 6
PR = Profile
GA = Gallery

I like this simple arrangement! its so useful to have no clutter!

I wouldn't start adding tags with your username, it won't help you as much as I can help you. :-)

I had an idea, I'm adding something right now. I do think however that Jay might need to look at the style, possible before it will go online.

What it does is it adds at the top of the search-results: Are you looking for the user named krayker ? Then click on gallery or profile.

UPDATE: it's online now

Is the yellow to much ?:

That is too much indeed. But we will work it out ;-) The feature is nice.

11. xymonau7 February 2010, 14:14 GMT +01:00

Does it work if a user name is typed in?

12. xymonau7 February 2010, 14:15 GMT +01:00

And the green from the little rgb squares would look better than the vivid yellow.

13. lennie7 February 2010, 14:30 GMT +01:00

I had tuned the yellow a bit down already. :-)

I changed it to green as you suggested (even used the colorpicker) What do you think ?

I think it's an improvement. Atleast the green fits with the rest of the site, which I also wanted.

Now all I need to do is remember and learn to type your username Dez. :-)

Not even sure I can pronounce it, maybe that's where the problems start.

Nice and helpful feature, thanks for this addition!

Yes, tonally it fits in a lot better, but is still bright enough to demand attention. A great little feature. My name is pronounced "ZY-mon - ow". It was supposed to be "xymon", but that was taken. And the au is for Australia, suggested by Yahoo or someone. I wanted it to be gender neutral for the net, but I guess it's all over the place now, so my secret is out! LOL A few years back I was talking to a group of strangers on the net - well. they were talking and I was typing as my microphone was broken. One guy kept calling me "X - Y - mono".

The people from southern Mexico have no trouble pronouncing your name as it is fairly close to the Aztec dialect.

I hear x--y-man-ow in my head when I see your name. Out loud, I just call you Dez. :)

17. xymonau8 February 2010, 11:37 GMT +01:00

And just how often do you call my name out loud, Cris? Hmm? LOL

18. lennie8 February 2010, 22:47 GMT +01:00

LoL
